ITHACA, N.Y. — A man was shot and killed early Saturday morning after attacking a police officer with a large knife inside the Ithaca Police Headquarters, according to the Ithaca Police Department.
Ithaca Police Chief Dennis Nayor said, the suspect who stabbed the officer has been identified as 57-year-old Michael DeCastro of Ithaca.
Police say the incident happened around 6:30 a.m. inside the police headquarters lobby. Police say DeCastro came through the public lobby, was buzzed into a second secure lobby and then attacked the officer with a knife.
“The way our lobby is set up, there are people come into the first set of doors and then they come into a separate set. The person was there as a person just possibly seeking police assistance on something just coming into the lobby. The sergeant went out to see what it was and within seconds he just viciously assailed the officer involved,” said Ithaca Police Chief Dennis Nayor during a press conference Saturday afternoon.
According to police, the officer then shot and killed DeCastro.
The officer was treated for minor injuries at the hospital before being released.
DeCastro reportedly used a large butcher knife with a 9-inch blade to attack the officer.
“This is a completely random, unprovoked, vicious attack on an officer,” said Chief Nayor.
The NYS Attorney General and Tompkins County District Attorney have reportedly been contacted and are involved with the investigation.
This investigation is still on-going and active.
